I'm a big fan of the Rust-Oleum products which is why I knew the Rust-Oleum Floor Tile Paint kit was the perfect product to update our kitchen tile floors. Linked here is the matte black Rust-Oleum Floor Tile Kit I purchased for this renovation.
Prep is key for this project. I used my favorite Krud Kutter to ensure the grout and tile were clean and grease free. I sprayed all over and then used our Ryobi drill with a medium bristle head. I've linked the products here. This was the first time I had tried this cleaning method, loved it! After using the power tool, I mopped up the krud and dirt with swiffer mop pads.
Now that the floors are clean and completely dry it was time for Step 1 of the Rustoleum Tile Floor Kit. If you are nervous about straight lines, you can tape off your floors. I decided to free hand it and cut in with a paint brush. It's best to keep a wet edge with the product so I worked small areas vs cutting in the whole kitchen (shown below). I used a paint brush, a small roller, and a large roller with a pole as pictured below. The paint had a very faint smell vs the Rust-Oleum Countetop paint I had previously used which had a very potent smell.

The kit says you only need one coat. Unfortunately, I needed two and only had 1 quart of the paint. You can see below after the first coat, you can see some of the white tile showing through. I quickly ordered another can of the black Step 1 quart on Amazon. I do not recommend this because the tints were slightly different across the cans. I should have ordered a gallon or two qts and mixed the two cans to ensure a consistent tint. It turned out to be okay.

Once the can came in the mail (via Amazon Prime, 2 days later), I applied the second coat. You only need to wait 6 hours to apply the Step 2 top coat. I applied Step 2 the following evening. We headed out of town for the weekend (somewhat planned). You can walk on it 24 hours later (light foot traffic). I'd recommened holding off as long as you can. For a full cure it takes 7 days. I waited 3 days before we walked on it, and 4 days before I put the rugs and chairs back.

I am happy with the outcome. From the research I've done, this won't last forever but I'm hoping with my rugs it will protect this high foot traffic area a bit longer. I've also decided that since I chose black, I could always just touch up any nics and scratches with a sharpie... :)
